Intrinsic motivation can be long-lasting and self-sustaining. The difference can be simplified as focus on the journey vs the goal. Extrinsic motivation is when you play a game for the reward. Reward can come from exploring the story, locations, and challenges. You play because you enjoy the combat, or the feeling of defeating a hard enemy, or achieving a difficult task. Intrinsic motivation is playing a game because you enjoy the game. This is based off of a psychology theory, so it will naturally have counterpoints. It is driven by an interest or enjoyment in the task itself, and exists within the individual rather than relying on external pressures or a desire for reward." I apologize for errors.
